April 3, 2021 – Nikki Suyama of the USA successfully defended her WKT North American title Saturday, defeating Justin Wong from Canada 226.7 to 226.3 in a 3 song sing-off. The final score was the closest margin of victory in the history of the World Karaoke Tour to date.

It was the 3rd title defence for Suyama after winning the title during the 2019 WKT World Championships. With the win, Suyama continues her streak as the longest-reigning champion in WKT’s history.

Wong came out with a stellar performance of Empty Chairs from Empty Tables from Les Miserables. He won the 1st round 76.9 – 73.3. The 2nd round was a near tie, 76.5 – 75.8, with Suyama pulling ahead thanks to her rendition of Who’s Loving You by the Jackson 5. The 3rd and final round was the deciding factor in the battle with Suyama winning 76.9 – 73.6 with her rendition of I’ll Never Love Again from A Star is Born.

The Champ didn’t let her nerves show but she felt them. “I was so nervous the entire time, all the way up to the very end,” Suyama said. “That’s the way these battles usually go. Justin was a great challenger. I’m just so happy I won.” Wong was competing in his first-ever WKT sing-off for a title. He won the opportunity thanks to his winning the 2021 Keep On Singing event earlier in the year.

This was the first career meeting between Suyama and Wong.
